Forced Marriages
Submitted by hannah on Fri, 01/10/2010 - 21:36.Details of the Forced Marriage etc... in the form of the Prosecution & Jurisdiction (Scotland)Bill were revealed this morning from Shakti Women's Aid offices in Edinburgh by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. Shakti Women's Aid offers support and information for those being threatened by forced marriage.
As well as outlining the measures of the Bill, Ms Sturgeon spoke to staff and to a client who was able to tell first hand the difficulties she faced and how Shakti had been able to help her.
Scotland's 1st African Radio Station
Submitted by hannah on Wed, 29/09/2010 - 20:06.Radio Kilimanjaro is a new social enterprise in Scotland, broadcasting particularly to the African population here but also to all with an interest in Africa. At present it broadcasts only online at Radio Kilimanjaro but it has been granted FM local licences for both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and hopes to start on-air broadcasts this Saturday 2nd October 2010 on 87.9FM in Glasgow and 87.7 in Edinburgh.
The online service can, of course, be accessed from anywhere in the world.
Meeting the Millennium Development Goals
Submitted by admin on Wed, 08/04/2009 - 17:25.The UN Summit on the Millennium Development Goals taking place this week concluded with the adoption of a global action plan to achieve the 8 anti-poverty goals by 2015 – their original target date. There was also an announcement of major new commitments for women's and children's health and other initiatives against poverty, hunger and disease. Is another action plan what is needed? Do countries simply need to put their money where their mouth is? Is aid what is needed? What about trade?
